Arguably the funniest of all comic operas, Rossini’s delightful, vivacious romp kicks off with an instantly recognizable overture, gains speed with a non-stop parade of hit tunes, and concludes with an “all is forgiven” finale bubbling over with joy. This prequel to Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro finds our quick-witted hero helping Almaviva whisk fair Rosina away from her ghastly guardian with a series of knockabout tricks fit for a Bugs Bunny cartoon. Stupefied sextets and breakneck patter make this energetic invention as fresh and appealing now as when it first burst onto the scene.
